About Colwyn Canoe Club

We are an active, family oriented club, based in Colwyn Bay in beautiful North Wales. The club is a well established club having been in formed in 1985, we are probably the oldest club in North Wales in continious exstence. In Colwyn Canoe Club we regularly paddle on the sea, lakes, rivers (including competition slalom) and have even been known to surf on the local beaches given the right conditions.

Please check out the information in the various sections of the web site and if you are interested in joining the club as a member, a coach or just to join us on a paddle please get in touch using the options on the “contact us” page.
We welcome and encourage new members to join us, be they complete novices or paddlers with lots of experience, any gender, young or old.
We have around 100 members from complete beginers through to 5 star accredited paddlers. We are affiliated to Canoe Wales, British Canoeing and are members of SportConwy and the Outdoor Partnership. We have a number of highly qualified and experienced coaches in most of the types of paddling commonly participated in. Apart from the pool sessions and external courses all our coaching is free. In addition, as Outdoor Partnership members, many of our external coaching can be delivered at substantially discounted rates (You must have been a club member for at least 1 year before discounts can be applied).

We paddle in the sea, on rivers, and in lakes. We occasionally dip our toes in the surf. Recently we have been able to venture in to slalom canoeing and kayaking, this is thanks to Jon Davies from Canoe Wales who has come along to coach this discipline as part of our pool session schedule when requested. This collaboration with Jon has led to some of our members becoming very accomplished slalom competition padders competing in the GB national championships .

Regular Meetings

We meet regularly on Friday evenings (dependant on volunteer coaches to run sessions) but also paddle on other days and times. In the Winter we use the pool at Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay on a Friday evenings as well as getting out on those lovely welsh rivers, lakes and sea areas. In the summer we paddle at various places usually within easy reach of our base in Colwyn Bay. We often have beginers session on Eirias Park Boating lake. These trips or sessions are based on what is viable and are dependant on weather conditions, water levels and availabilty of personnel etc.

The winter Friday evening pool session provide a safe and warm environment to learn and develop paddling skills, plus have some fun and play a few games. We do prefer all complete beginners to attend either the pool sessions or boating lake sessions to get the  very basic skills needed before venturing out on to open water. The winter pool sessions are very popular so we advise you to book early.

Whether it’s river kayaking, slalom, open canoeing, sea kayaking or surfing that floats your boat, come along and join us.
